RBL staff enjoy charity sailing trip

24th July 2017

Staff from the Devon and Cornwall area team of the Royal British Legion (RBL) braved strong winds and stormy seas on board the Spirit of Falmouth this week.

Ten team members visited Turn to Starboard to find out how the RBL supports the charity and help veterans affected by military operations.

The fact-finding day out included sailing on board the charity’s 92-foot tall ship followed by a presentation by Turn to Starboard founder and CEO Shaun Pascoe.

RBL Area Manager for Devon and Cornwall Susanne Archard said: “It was a great day and really good to bring the team together to gain a sense of how veterans can benefit from the service the charity offers.

“Although the stormy weather prevented us sailing too far, we did get the chance to familiarise ourselves with the boat while chatting to veterans about their experiences. The most exciting bit was when a thunderstorm prevented the tall ship getting close to the jetty so we all had to be transported across in a smaller boat. It was certainly choppy and we all got very wet!”

The group also met with veterans about to set sail aboard the tall ship on the Round Britain Challenge 2017. The 2000-mile expedition aims to help participants gain new skills while highlighting the challenges veterans can face when leaving the military.
