Our deep connection
Strengthens the support we can offer.
The Team
Here at Turn to Starboard we are a tight-knit group that feels more like a family or tribe than a typical organisation. More than half of the staff are veterans themselves, bringing shared experience and understanding to everything they do. This deep connection strengthens the support they offer, creating a space where veterans can truly relate to those leading the programmes.
Each team member plays a vital role, from instructors to shore team, working together to create an environment of trust, empathy, and camaraderie. We are a community where veterans are supported by those who truly understand the challenges of military life.
If you sail with us, you'll get to know us soon enough, but until then here's a bit of sailing trivia for all of us:

Trustees
Our Trustees work together to develop a clear strategy for Turn to Starboard and ensure that the work we do and goals of the organisation are in line with our vision.
-
Captain Lee Hazard MBE, MStJ, KHP, MA
Chair of Trustees
Lee joined the board in September 2026 and chairs the Board of Trustees.
A Captain in the Royal Navy with 36 years' service, Lee has seen first-hand the impact that operations and service life can have on people and their families. That experience showed him the real need for excellent non-clinical recovery, and he found it in Turn to Starboard. He became a trustee to give back to those who have served, and to help them rebuild purpose, resilience and opportunity.
As a senior director at the Invictus Games Birmingham 2027, Lee leads programmes that support the recovery of wounded, injured and sick service personnel through sport. He brings a clear understanding of how to run a well-governed, efficient charity, together with strong connections across the Armed Forces community. He holds an MBE and is a Member of the Order of St John.
Outside work, Lee is always looking for community and adventure.
-
Elaine Roberts
Trustee
Elaine joined the board in December 2024 and leads the charity's impact reporting.
Turn to Starboard brings together three things that matter to Elaine: her love of sailing and oceans, her experience in supporting people's wellbeing and development, and her service as an Army officer. She is passionate about helping people be their best, whatever that means for them, and knows how much confidence and resilience matter when people face change.
An experienced trustee, Elaine has served on the boards of four charities, including chairing nominations and remuneration committees. A former Chief Marketing Officer and now an executive coach, she brings expertise in strategy, commercial growth, sustainability and resilient leadership. She uses this experience to show funders and partners the difference Turn to Starboard makes to the people it serves.
Outside work, Elaine is studying for an MA in Photography, and enjoys travel, skiing and cycling.
-
Air Commodore Mark Lorriman-Hughes CBE
Trustee
Mark joined the board in December 2024 as a serving member of the Armed Forces.
Mark is an Air Commodore in the Royal Air Force and Commandant of the Royal Air Force College. Every day he sees how much the wide and varied Armed Forces community relies on charities like Turn to Starboard. He became a trustee to give something back, and because the charity offered the chance to work with fantastic people on a truly worthwhile cause.
Mark brings an up-to-date understanding of daily life for serving personnel and their families, and of the people-focused programmes led by the Ministry of Defence. He is a direct link between the charity and the UK Armed Forces, championing Turn to Starboard across the services. Mark holds a CBE.
Outside work, Mark is an avid supporter of Liverpool Football Club and Gloucester Rugby.
-
Sarah Marshall
Trustee
-
Al Robinson
Trustee
Al joined the board in September 2026 and is keen to support the CEO on commercial partnerships, sponsorship and property.
As a veteran, Al understands the challenges that service personnel can face during and after the move to civilian life. Operational deployments overseas showed Al how much teamwork, purpose and belonging matter. Al believes that time outdoors can play a powerful part in recovery, and is proud to support a charity that uses sailing to build confidence, wellbeing and connection for veterans and their families.
Al brings significant experience in governance, strategy and organisational leadership from senior roles in the military, the public sector and commercial organisations. A background in transformation, business development and building relationships with partners helps Al support Turn to Starboard to grow its reach and make the most of its impact.
Outside work, Al loves mountaineering, skiing and sea kayaking, but is happiest watching his children compete in sport.
-
Sharon Scully
Trustee
Sharon joined the board in September 2026 as Finance Lead Trustee.
Sharon has seen within her own family how leaving the Armed Forces can affect people's mental health. She wanted to give her finance expertise to a charity with a strong sense of community, and to a cause she feels passionate about. She values the way Turn to Starboard helps people recover, build friendships with others who understand, and gain sailing qualifications for personal use or a new career.
A Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (FCCA), Sharon has more than 30 years' experience as a Chief Finance Officer in large companies and has also supported small businesses. She brings expertise in strategy, risk, compliance and commercial management, and offers the management team both support and challenge.
Outside work, Sharon lives in Cornwall with her family and loves walking the ever-changing coastline.
-
Neil Harper
Trustee
Neil joined the board in June 2025. He oversees the charity's fleet maintenance and supports on contracts and HR.
Neil has sailed and repaired sailing boats all his life. When he retired, he looked for a charity role that brought together professional mariners, the Armed Forces and sailing, and found it in Turn to Starboard. His son serves as a submariner in the Royal Navy, and Neil has many friends in the Royal Navy and Royal Marines, so he brings a family member's view to the charity's work.
Neil spent 40 years as a semiconductor process engineer, working across engineering, operations, business development and programme management, latterly in senior leadership. A qualified wooden boat builder and RYA Coastal Skipper with more than 15,000 miles in his logbook, he helps with project management and boat refits, and mentors senior staff.
Neil may be an engineer by training, but he is a people person at heart who loves helping others get where they want to be in life.
Patrons
We are proud to have Patrons who support the charity and get behind a wide range of campaigns to help spread the word.
